Buying Check List for:
W 126 ie. Benz 560
We hope this point form check list assists you with the selection of your next W 126 Mercedes-Benz. Most of these items are taken from our more in depth page on "Buying Tips" If you have any information that we can add to this list please let us know. We want you to be as knowledgeable as possible when looking for your next collectable. Though any W 126 can be a worthwhile collectable many of the below points are general recommendations.
- V8 starting 1986 though 1988-91 best
- 420 starting 1987 though no acceleration stabilizer
- 5-cylinder 350SD may develop cylinder head cracks
- 6-cylinder version after 1985 better
- 380 up to and including 1985 may have worn out camshaft
- valve cover seals may leak
- no idiot lights on, not even faintly when car is running
- how new is the battery
- exhaust manifold leaks
- engine ticking even after warm, worn camshaft
- replace timing chain at 200,000km(124,000 miles)
- white exhaust, engine cold, ok
- white exhaust, engine warm,serious problems
- blue exhaust,engine cold,not that bad, may be dried out valve stem seals
- gray to black exhaust,too rich fuel,dirty air filter, test fuel injectors or wrongly adjusted engine
- engine idling,remove oil filler cap,push on it with finger,if pushes back do compression leak down test,serious problem
- transmission shifts gently,not hard,no thuds
- prefer no hitches
- check differential for leaks
- check tires,bearings and ball joints
- no extremely wide tires
- check self-leveling rear suspension
- check brakes, rears with ABS wear out quicker
- clear coat pealing
- pre 1986 watch for rust
- check jack supports and wheel arches, remove and look behind chrome wheel arches if possible
- C-pillar,inside,where chrome trim ends
- rear windshield above and below
- underside of doors
- trunk damp
- check spare tire and under spare tire
- Washer Reservoir Full (Not Leaking)
- Rust on Battery Tray
- Rust under Battery Tray
- doors close,no clanking
- even width of body seams
- scrutinize paint
- blue interiors possible problem,check thoroughly especially dashboard
- check all wood trim
- check A/C and heating
- auto climate control more expensive to fix,make sure it functions well
- check central locking system
- sunroof working well, possible problems with dark painted cars
- check for replaced airbags,look in glove box and by driver door latch for new installation date
- often cover over distributor cap missing, you should not be able to see where the leads of the wires connect to the distributor cap. This protects the wire leads from getting wet in heavy rain and/or when washing the engine bay.
- look for rare options like "trip computer"
