Porsche 928 Data

History

The 928's history is long and exhaustive. It began well before the idea of a 924, yet came into production long after 924's were being sold. The concept of a high performance grand touring car being added to the Porsche line-up came to light towards the end of the 60's. Sparked by declining 911 sales together with continually stricter regulations on emissions, noise and crash worthiness of rear engine automobiles, Ferry Porsche wanted a model to replace the 911 that would meet the needs of the ever growing American sports car purchaser.

The Porsche 928 was unveiled at the Geneva Car Show in March of 1977. The first consumer production 928 was introduced as a 1978 model. It was the only sports car to receive the coveted title of "Car of the Year".

Al Holbert broke 2 land speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats driving a 1987 928S4. This made the 928S4 the fastest production car in the world attaining a blistering top speed of 171 MPH.

1990 928 Model Year Changes

The 1990 928 was the first car in the world to offer as standard equipment; driver and passenger airbags.

A computer-controlled limited-slip rear differential was new for 1990. It automatically transferred additional toque to the drive wheel with the most traction. This was calculated based upon wheel speed, lateral acceleration and slippage.

An RDK tire pressure monitoring system was added which alerted the driver if any tire pressure dropped below a preset level.
