1986-1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 Data

History

In September of 1985 the new reworked W126 was introduced at the IAA in Frankfurt. The most visible changes were to the engines. The most spectacular new engine was the development of the 5 litre into the 5.6 litre V8. The 560SEL and the 560SEC were the most powerful Mercedes-Benz production cars ever.

In September of 1987 stronger versions of all the V8 engines were introduced with increased compression of about 10% and performance increases of between 6-10%.

They were equipped with larger brakes and redesigned standard equipment alloy wheels.

Improved handling was attained from adding a new lower apron which decreased lift and improved high speed stability.

In 1988 a modified suspension provided better handling, safety and riding comfort.

Performance wise the the 560 is not much better than the 500 however the the 560 runs smoother and quieter. The 560 revs a bit higher than the 500 supporting a more sport driving style.

On the Autobahn the 560 was known as a "Porsche Hunter" due to it blistering top speed of 155 MPH(250 KPH) in its top model, the ECE which generated 295HP at 5000 RPM and 336 ft/lbs of torque at 3750 PRM. It went 0-60MPH in 6.7 seconds, 1/4 mile 15.0 seconds.

U.S./Canadian versions were limited to 238HP at 4800 RPM and 287 ft/lbs of torque at 3500 RPM with top speeds of about 142 MPH (229 KM/h), still commendable for a large sedan. 0-60 MPH in 7.5 seconds, 1/4 mile 15.8 seconds.

Normal Euro Spec. generated 275HP at 5200 RPM with 317ft/lbs of torque at 3750 RPM. Top speed of 149 MPH (240 KM/h). 0-60 MPH in 7.0 seconds, 1/4 mile 15.2 seconds. These are the ones we usually sell.

The successor to the 126 series was introduced in March of 1991 at the Genfer Motor Show. Production of the new series began in April of 1991. Production of the 126 series ceased between August and October of 1991 though the last versions in special production guise were manufactured until April of 1992, a testament to its popularity and reputation for exemplary quality.

The 126 series became Mercedes-Benz's most produced top class car in the history of the company.
