History
The Porsche 944 was first introduced in 1982 as a replacement for the 924 even thogh both cars were sold for a number of years. Its last year of production was in 1991 to be replaced by the 968.
It was a big success for Porche earning many aoutomotive awards over the years. Its models consisted of 944, 944S, 944 Turbo and 944S2.
The first 2.5L engine was based upon half of a 5.0L 928.
944S2
Sold between 1989 and 1991 it had the world's largest 4 cylinger engine at 3.0L. The S2 was the first time a cabriolet was available in a 944. 1990 was the lowest production yesr for the coupe model
The 1990 928S4 was the first car in the world to offer as standard equipment; driver and passenger airbags.
A computer-controlled limited-slip rear differential was new for 1990. It automatically transfered additional toque to the drive wheel with the most traction. This was calculated based upon wheel speed, lateral acceleration and slippage.
An RDK tyre pressure monitoring system was added which alerted the driver if any tire pressure dropped below a preset level.
