1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL - Sold!

This car is truly meant for a serious collector who can appreciate the exceptional condition this car is in. It turns heads wherever it is. It is not the cheapest 560SEL out there but you are not going to have to worry about being plagued with mechanical problems or costly repairs associated with high mileage or poorly maintained 560's. This car is Barrett-Jackson quality, fully serviced with many new parts, everything is in full working order, no accidents or dents, the paint is absolutely stunning, I challenge you find a nicer one. Please review our information on what we have done to prepare this collector car for its new home.

This is a European Version of the 560SEL. It has a much cleaner, sleek look since the front and rear bumpers are designed the way Mercedes-Benz wanted them. The U.S./Canadian versions were blessed with significantly oversized fat front and rear bumpers in order to meet DOT/TC standards. The Euro version is five inches shorter due to the smaller bumpers.

The headlights are the one piece Euro version using the H4 Halogen bulbs rather than the sealed beam headlights on the North American version.

The overall condition of this car is much more reflected through its low mileage than its age. Its stunning color is as true to its heritage as when Mercedes-Benz first introduced this color over 40 years ago. A true classic color for a distinguished car. There are a few unique features this car has that are not always found on North American versions:

A few items had to be attended to to bring this car back into superb condition. The black rubber seals on the washer fluid container where the hoses connect were leaking so they were replaced. There was a scratch and very small dent in the chrome on the back of the truck lid so it was replaced. The engine coolant expansion tank was replaced. It worked fine however we hate the ugly yellow/brown they turn to over time.

Driving this car, especially on the highway is an absolute pleasure. Climbing up the hill to the highest point of the Trans Canada Highway (where it widens to 3 lanes for really slow vehicles) at 120 km/h is a breeze; put your foot into it climbing this hill and you are soon exceeding 200 km/h and still pulling strong. There is a reason why this car is referred to as a "Porsche Hunter" on the Autobahn.

I am a current Mercedes-Benz Club of America, Inc. member as well as a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of Canada.

Tire Notes

The above tires are only rated for 112 MPH/180 KPH. If you plan on driving this car at the higher speeds it was designed for you should upgrade to a higher speed rated tire.

For ride comfort, quietness, and good mileage this is a great tire.

The Bridgestone Sneaker is not sold in North America. It features the following Bridgestone Technologies:

C0CS- Computer Optimized Component System

L.L. Carbon- Long Link Carbon

Key Hole Sipe

O-Bead

5 Degree NR

If you prefer increased performance from a stock size tire we recommend you read the following article: Grand Touring Summer Tires

Starting in 1992 the replacement for the 560SEL went to 235/60/16 tires and wheels. If you prefer to upgrade your 560SEL to a 16" rims with wider tires we recommend the following:

225/55/16 front and rear or

245/50/16 for the rear

Remember that going too wide of a tire on this car will cause several suspension components to wear out prematurely.

Car and Owner History

This car was originally sold in Japan through Mercedes-Benz of Japan. It is apparent that this car was very well looked after. Based upon its age it was only driven about 2000 km (1243 miles) per year.

The car came with Dealer installed Mercedes-Benz Embroidered Covers for the seats, head rests and arm rests. They were white and unsoiled when we received the car. I have been told by our local Mercedes-Benz Dealer (Lone Star) that this is a very expensive Mercedes-Benz Dealer option that was not offered here in North America.

I have attained a Data Card copy of this car from Lone Star Mercedes-Benz. It shows the following option codes:

  • Paint Code: 172U
  • Equipment Code 971A
  • SA codes:
    • 226- footrests in the rear
    • 253- Becker radio Mexico cassette, full stereo, electronic, AM/FM, for Japan only
    • 442- airbag in steering wheel
    • 498- Japan version
    • 524- paintcoat preservation
    • 581- automatic climate control
    • 597- heat-insulating glass, windshield, band filter
    • 601- oil for rear axle with limited-slip differential, in canisters and containers
    • 613- lamp unit, asymmetrical, l.h. traffic
    • 808- Change of year of model, last figure shows new model year
    • 872- electric seat heater for rear seat bench, left and right
    • 873- seat heater for left and right front seats

I contacted Daimlerchrysler in Stuttgart, Germany to confirm a factory data card for this car. They sent me a factory Specification Sheet for this car which confirmed the above options as well as other pertinent data. (Please contact us if you would like more information).

This car truly looks like it just drove off the Showroom Floor and would be a welcome addition to any discerning collector of fine Mercedes-Benz Classic Automobiles.
